Dambulla Cave Temples

This morning we had an early start once more, again to beat the crowds – this time at the Dambulla Cave Temples. The place has a history of more than two thousand years; there are a total of five caves here – all of which contain both Buddha statues (overall around 150), as well as paintings on walls and ceiling.

Given how early we got here (and given the fact, that we used a hidden side entrance, half way up the hill), we had the place pretty much for ourselves; the atmosphere was peaceful, relaxed – or even divine – – which really added greatly to the experience. And that experience here in the end is, what makes this place special – hard (or impossible) to put in words – the photos may convey some of it.

On the way down to the parking lot we saw multiple Chinese tour groups on their way up to the caves – so that early alarm really paid off 😉
