Evighetsfjord

Just after dinner (the traditional festive welcome dinner) we had left the safety of the fjord and made it out into the waters of the Davis Strait – taking a Southern course and as such going with the waves – – it turned a bumpy trip nevertheless – but only for about two hours. After two hours we already turned inland again and made it into the next fjord – the Evighetsfjord, out destination and playground for this morning.

The Hanseatic did anchor in front of the massive Sermerssuatsiaq Glacier.

While we enjoyed a glacier-vista enriched breakfast, the crew got started to prepare the zodiacs and the landing spot. Today a longer hike (advertised with an elevation gain of about 500m) was on offer. Around 40 people had registered for the hike the previous night – and were now the first ones to make it ashore.

Some changed into hiking boots, others just continued in rubber boots (including myself). It was now up the hill in a side valley. During the last ice age another glacier arm must have come down here, as we had to climb over the gravel and rocks, that that glacier had deposited here long ago. Gravel and rock eventually turned into tundra (still with rock and gravel underneath). Views of the fjord and glacier got better and better the higher we got – also – the higher we got, the whiter it got … fresh snow was greeting us.

Eventually we reached the destination of the hike – a plateau with a small lake of melt water. Now the sun was out and turned this into a good point for a break – before we made it back down to the shore – of course not without a little detour to another good viewpoint – with even better vistas of the glacier.

Before making it back to the ship, the zodiac driver used the opportunity to get us closer to the glacier for a close-up view and impression.

We got back to the ship in time for a late lunch – and the rest of the day at sea. We were heading out into the still-shaky Davis Strait again – this time heading North for the Disko Bay. Choices for the afternoon included some lectures, relaxation, sport in the fitness room – or just lying in bed sea sick. Needless to say, that service at dinner was super-attentive tonight – there were simply not too many passengers in the restaurant attending … (food was great though).
