Another country, another capital – and another city to explore. We started with an all-morning guided city tour, passing by the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians (Bremen is a sister city to Riga), checking out St. Peter’s Church and the nearby House of the Black Heads and town hall square. A bit more time was dedicated to Riga Cathedral, a medieval, now-Lutheran church with features of different architectural styles (Romanesque, Gothic to Baroque). Via the St. Jacob Catholic Cathedral and the Swedish Gate we made it to the Powder Tower, from where we left the old part of town and made our way over to the Art Nouveau Quarter, with its Art Nouveau buildings. A walk via the Freedom Monument finally got us to Riga Central Market, where the tour concluded – and we were free for explorations on ourselves (including an opportunity for a midday snack).
