From the hotel it was to the port, where we had chartered a boat for a trip out to the lagoon to catch views of the great dune (Sklandytojų kopa). In contrast to the Parnidis Dune, the great one is out of bounds for the public, (a) as it is a nature reserve and (b) as the border line between Russia and Lithuania cuts right through it. During the boat trip we also got fairly close (less than 1km) to the border with patrol ships of both sides in view.
The boat trip took about an hour – and after arrival back to town and a midday snack, it was time to cross over to the Baltic Sea again for a bit of beach time and a quick swim (at a brisk 17°C). I took another route back – again passing over Parnides Dune, to get back into town in good time for dinner.
