Encounter on Malo Island

From the volcano we continued for Nendoe Island (a mere 27 nautical miles away); officials were coming aboard from the regional capital Lata, so the ship could be cleared into the Solomon Islands.

Once the formalities were closed, we were off for the first expedition landing (= wet zodiac landing) at Malo Island. Here a performance of traditional dance/ music was waiting for us (as well as an intense rain shower or two). The show was great – and not only enjoyed by us – but also by the locals from the surrounding villages.

Afterwards we had the opportunity for a bit of exploration on the island and make the way (including a water crossing) to the village, where villagers were happy to show us around. Overall a great start into the expedition – with many more similar, but different encounters ahead of us.
