On the Road across Bhutan

We left the capital in the morning for the 125km drive (about four hours – plus stops) to Gangtey Monastery and the Phobjikha Valley.

Our first stop was already less than an hour into the drive, as we made it over the first pass of the day – Dochula Pass with its 108 stupas, a cafe and great views – all at about 3100m above sea level.

From the pass it was downhill, passing towards and through the Punakha valley and with a photo stop at Wangdue Zam bridge for views of the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, towering on a nearby hill. We continued East heading into the mountains again – and towards the highest point of the day at Lawala Pass – 3250m above sea level – complete with a group of yaks grazing nearby. The destination of the day now was literally around the corner.
