The Salar de Uyuni

Today we started out two day excursion around the Salar de Uyuni. we were picked up at around 10:00 by our guides and their 4WDs – and went off for two amazing days into the Salar de Uyuni, the biggest salt flat on Earth.

At our first stop – in Colchani – we had the opportunity to buy souvenirs made from salt and get some insight how table salt is prepared using the salt from the Salar. After Colchani we actually set foot (or better tire) into the Salar; the next stop only 15 minutes ahead – to see some of the Ojos del Salar (Eyes of the Salar), i.e. areas, where (cold) underground water bubbles to the surface. After that we also stopped at the Hotel Playa Blanca, a hotel completely built from salt.

Around lunchtime we arrived at the Isla de los Pescadores also known as Isla Inca Huasi; lunch was served quickly and consisted of chicken pasta, potatoes and salad. After lunch we had the opportunity to follow a trail on the island to get superb views of the Salar, of the cacti and of the island. There was also the chance to go for a walk into the vastness of the Salar.

After an exciting day in the Salar we finally arrived in Bella Vista. While our hosts from Tonito Tours prepared dinner (nice vegetable soup, salad, chicken, fries and rice) some of us decided to challenge the local children in ball games (and let them win) – others opted for lazying around, my choice was a walk in the surrounding hills.
