The Inca Trail – Day 3

Everyone expected this night – at 3600m above sea level the one at highest elevation –  to be freezing. However it turned out okay.

We set off after an omelette breakfast. This third day was the day with the longest overall distance, two high passes (one at 4000m, the other at 3800m) and a downstairs walk of roughly 5000 (uneven Inca) steps – I found this day more strenous than the day before…
It was also another World cup day, with Germany vs. Italy being scheduled at 14:00 – and the next available TV set being available in Winaywayna, our destination for the day.

En route we came across a number of Inca ruins; the more spectacular being the one at the start of the steps – Phuyupatamarca.

After arrival in camp, tea (today with tacos and guacamole) and a football result (Italy won) – we went for a walk from camp to yet another ruin site – Winaywayna, roughly half an hour away. This site again was bigger and more impressive than the previous ones – and was a good warm-up for the next day.
