Petra

This day was the main motivation for me to actually travel to Jordan – with the same being true for many of my fellow travelers – today was the day of our visit to Petra, the ancient Nabataean desert city. A long, yet exciting and amazing day was ahead of us.

We started at the visitor center, then using the 1km path to the entry of the Siq, the gorge that leads into Petra. We then followed the Siq for another 1.5 km – until it finally opened, with the first famous view of Petra becoming visible – the view to the Treasury (Al-Khazneh).

Continuing the path – through the now widened gorge – led us to the Street of Facades – the necropolis of Petra.

Finally we got, what used to be the center of Petra; complete with temples, baths and markets. From here – after a quick lunch break – we headed on through a small side valley to reach the Monastery (Al-Deir) and the surrounding lookouts.

From the Monastery I started my way back to the visitor center; now passing by the Royal Tombs and passing through a changed Siq (due to changed light conditions).

We made our way back into Petra – to in front of the Treasury – in the late evening to experience Petra in the dark. The way was lined out with candles, as was the area in front of the treasury, making this a quiet different experience compared to the experience just a few hours earlier.
