I made it to the other side of the planet – into Christchurch – after around 36 hours on planes and in airports (changing planes in Dubai, stopping on the way in Bangkok and Sydney).
After arrival I went off to catch some daylight and get a glimpse of Christchurch to quickly discover that the earthquake back in February 2011 had hit town harder than expected (based on the media coverage I have seen). In fact big portions of downtown had been converted into a red zone and made off limits for the people.
- Bridge of Remembrance – now used as memorial for the victims of the February 2011 earthquake
- Glimpse into the red zone
- Glimpse into the red zone
- Container city at Cashel Street, used as retail space for businesses that were previously located in what is now the red zone
