This Sunday saw us heading out for castles and citadels.
We started early in the morning, first making it to Peleș Castle. Built only in the late 19th / early 20th century in German Renaissance style, this castle was the first in Europe to have electricity, central heating and a central vacuuming system.
The castle felt like straight out of a fairy tale with small towers and turrets, huge entry hall and rooms for about any occasion … I would not call this a castle – but rather a chateau.
The next stop – Râșnov Citadel – was the complete opposite … this one going back to the 13th century (so medieval proper), built as protection against raiding troops.
On the inside the citadel hosts a number of shops and a small museum – all incorporated nicely and giving the fortress a nice touch.
