Galle

Most of the others had booked the optional whale watching trip (which translated to another 05:00am morning); I decided against that (I guess, I have seen my share of whales, evidence here) and in favor of an easy morning with a bit of a lie-in and a late breakfast. I spent the rest of the morning further exploring Unawatuna.

In the afternoon the group met up again for a trip to nearby Galle. Galle is a colonial gem and the Dutch and British influence around the old fort cannot be denied. We had a guided tour around the fort area, from the old gate via the Dutch hospital, the Dutch reformed and the Anglican church towards the main gate and then up the fortifications walking from one bastion to the next – taking in the views over town and the sea. The walk ended at the Dutch hospital again. Here we made it to one of the many restaurants inside for a last group dinner.
