This morning saw us heading for a city tour around Baku. We were picked up by bus and made it uphill to the Highland Park (Dağüstü park), just across the street from the Baku Flame Towers and close to the funicular station.
The tour started with a walk through the park and along Martyrs’ Lane. A cemetery and memorial to those, killed during the events during the Black January in 1990, as well as those, who died in the Nagorno-Karabakh War. The lane ends at the Shahidlar Monument with its eternal flame. From here we also could get a good view of town.
The bus did pick us up at the bottom of the park and we transferred over to the old town, we had stops at the statue of Aliaga Vahid and the Museum of Miniature Books (to me probably the most weird and random subject for a museum ever), before making it to Palace of The Shirvanshahs (Şirvanşahlar Sarayı). Here we had a tour of the museum, as well as the tomb and bath house. After all those dry facts, it was time for a well-deserved coffee break (plus ice cream), that we got in a cafe just opposite the Cuma Mosque (Cümə Məscidi). We concluded the tour through the old town with a stop at the Maiden Tower (Qız qalası).
