Kitava Island Discovery

A new day, a new island – we had covered 159 nautical miles over night and made our way to the Trobriand Islands. This morning’s destination was Kitava Island.

Today we were looking at a dry landing at the island’s pier; from here it was a short walk to a big souvenir market with all sorts of woodwork and drawings on offer. There were also the usual forbidden objects on offer – from pieces of coral and shells (on the list of endangered species – and as such a guarantee for fun at customs) to cultural artifacts (which may not be exportable).

Eventually a cultural performance started – nicely at the beach with the ocean and another smaller island in the backdrop. After the show there was the opportunity, to explore the island – and make the 2km walk to the other village Kumwagea – for a glimpse of the island school and the beautiful alley lined by frangipani trees, leading to the church.

I made my way all the way to the church – and was about the furthest out, when it started raining heavily – a true tropical downpour … wet, but at 30°C and with an umbrella for immediate protection no real issue (especially with camera and phone nice and dry in a waterproof backpack). The rain did not last too long and I was already dried up by the time, I made it back to the pier (well – I was actually wet again … sweat not rain though).
