Today was a long driving day and essentially the continuation of our Ladakh road trip. The destination was over in the Shyok Valley, the 112km trip to Diskit (our first stop on the other side) took us along the Leh-Hundar-Road, passing the mighty Khardung-La high mountain pass – at 5,359 m (17,582 ft) above sea level [*] – along the way.
Views were amazing as we made our way up from Leh, with the occasional photo stop and control point. After a short stop at the top we made our way down again – to similar stunning surroundings and more photo stops – as well as a chai stop in North Pullu along the Pharka Tokpo creek.
[*] A note on elevations: elevations for the various passes differ by source – from differences of a few meters to a few hundred meters. In some cases this can be attributed to a diversion of the complete road with the old pass road destroyed in winter and new one taking a slightly different route – in other cases it is simple sensationalism. The numbers I use are the ones that feel most agreeable to me – usually looking across BRO signs, elevations in Openstreetmap or Google maps and Wikipedia, plus own GPS readings – – fridge magnets or t-shirts do not make good sources.
