It took us six days from Tristan da Cunha until we finally made it to South Georgia in the morning of New Year’s Eve.
We first headed to the Southern portion of the island, where the plan was to get onshore to visit a colony of king penguins at Gold Harbour. But – guess what – the wind was too strong to actually allow the crew to bring the zodiacs to water … so we had to stay on the Hanseatic and get a glimpse of the harbour and the penguins from the ship through binoculars. We continued North – aiming for St. Andrews Bay and a further landing attempt … which once more did not work out due to wind conditions.
At least the surroundings turned interesting as we passed through an iceberg cemetery with many, many icebergs (including tabular ones) floating around us … a quiet unusual situation for South Georgia, this far North (at around 54.5°S).
