During lunch (the usual cup of soup) the ship continued through the iceberg cemetery into Cumberland Bay with Grytviken – whaling station in the past, today museum and British Antarctic Survey research station – being our next destination
At Grytviken – in a harbour within the bay – we were finally able to get into the zodiacs and off the ship and thus actually back on firm ground (after 11.5 days on the shaky Hanseatic). We landed in the middle of a seal colony and made our way through the colony up to the cemetery to visit the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton and pay homage to the boss.
From the cemetery we walked over to the old whaling station, the museum, shop and church before making it back to Hanseatic.
