Back to Church in Lichtenau (aka. Alluitsoq)

After two and half churches yesterday (counting the church ruin of Hvalsey as half) another small church was waiting for us today.

We made it to the small settlement of Lichtenau or Alluitsoq, found in the late 18th century as a mission town of the Hutterites; today pretty much abandoned with just an elderly couple (and their dog) staying behind.

After a quick exploration of the village (including its half-timber-style church) I joined some others and we were making our way up the slope behind town to get a view of the fjord from the top (a good 250 meters in elevation).

On the way back I made it over to the small peninsula in front of town – to discover an old cemetery covering both graves of huterite settlers (buried according to European tradition, i.e. actual graves) and those of Inuit (with bodies just buried under stones and left to decomposition … and skulls and bones clearly visible).
