A business workshop brought me and colleagues from around the world to the town of Boulder, Colorado. Christian (one of my colleagues) and myself already arrived on Saturday and thus had Sunday for acclimatisation (eight hours time difference…) – we … Continue reading
We now were on the final leg of the trip … we left Caye Caulker, made it back to Belize City, from where we caught a bus up to Chetumal in Mexico – and then on to Playa del Carmen – the final stop on this trip.
We once more had a last group dinner – this time in a cave restaurant in Playa del Carmen.
We left Guatemala on the 9th and went on into Belize for a new country, currency, language and culture. The first stop was San Ignacio, a small (and ugly) town and the gateway to all sorts of jungle and cave activities.
Most of the group did not have a great desire to stay on in San Ignacio and thus left the tour to move ahead to Caye Caulker; I was one of these. We left early in the morning of the 10th, took the express bus to Belize City (via Belmopan), from there the water taxi and arrived on the island around nine – just in time for breakfast. We now had one additional day on the island – two and half now in total – enough time for me to finish my open water diving course.
The first day on the island was used to get everything arranged (in my case diving lessons for the next two days) – there was even time to go on a guided snorkelling tour with Mario. After that – at least for me – it was diving lessons and learning.

We left Flores in the middle of night; the plan was to be on one of the big Maya pyramids just in time to watch the sun rise over the jungle and the Tikal ruin site – similar to my … Continue reading
Today we left Rio Dulce and continued for the next highlight of the tour – Tikal.
This meant we had to go to Flores, the gateway to Tikal. We got here in the late morning. Exploration of town only started after a three hour lunch (let’s say, they were not too efficient in getting the dishes out).

Today was our full day in the Rio Dulce region. We spent it on an all day boat trip, first going downstream to the coast and Livingston – with an occasional stop on the way. We had lunch in Livingston. … Continue reading
Today was an early morning; we left Antigua by chicken bus to get over to Guatemala City (Guate), where we caught a normal bus to drive the seven hours down to Rio Dulce in the Guatemala low lands, close to the coast.
The last leg for this trip was by boat to our (basic) resort, where we had the rest of day (it was already late afternoon by now) to chill out, have a swim and a drink.
We had another half day in Panajachel before making it back to Antigua.
In Antigua it was back into the same hotel and even the same rooms as a few night earlier. This was a chance to lean back and enjoy town for another half day.

Today worked out different than planned – the original plan had been to take an early boat from Panajachel to San Pedro and then to hike up San Pedro Volcano. We got up at five in the morning, went to … Continue reading
