Jungle Camp – a Hammock, the Jungle and me

Today we left Poring by bus … and made our journey to Mengaris village, a small community at Kinabatangan river.

From here we started an overnight boat trip into the jungle including a night in a hammock in the jungle – the real Jungle Camp.

It took a short ride on a boat to reach the landing point for our jungle camp .. here we first had to set up camp, i.e. everyone (except for me) had to setup his/her hammock. Afterward we went for a sunset boat ride looking out for wildlife. After dinner we had the opportunity to go on a night walk through the jungle – to get a glimpse of the nocturnal jungle inhabitants.

The best moment was probably also the scariest … half the group was gathering around the snake shown in one of the photos below, then our guide realized what was happening … first sound was just ‘oh…oh’ surely no good sign … in the end it turned out it was a harmless … but better be safe than sorry.

Rafflesia

The small village of Poring was our next destination. While it is known for its hot springs, we were lucky enough to see Rafflesia – the world’s biggest flower – in the surrounding jungle in full bloom.

At Laban Rata

We had made it to Laban Rata … got here after approximately 5.5 hours – and just a few minutes after the rest of the group – Team Turtoise – who had taken the Summit Trail.

The rest of the day was to rest, relax, enjoy the view, enjoy the food and prepare for what was to come tomorrow.

Leaving Kiau … and over to Mt. Kinabalu NP

This morning – after an excellent breakfast – we were led around in the village, there was also the opportunity to buy walking sticks and bottle holders. Afterward we we got transferred over to Kinbalu park for a preparatory walk around the National Park headquarter; the walk included the botanical garden.

Kiau and an Introduction to Sabah

Another state, another group …

Today was another first day of the tour … the second part had started, with a new group composition and a new tour leader. Already todays were now back to the road on our way to the first homestay in Kiau, the home of our mountain guides for the Kinabalu climb.

After arrival in Kiau and move into the guesthouse of the local catholic church (no kidding here), we enjoyed the first cultural show of the trip – dancing, singing and music. First we enjoyed the show… then we had to join in. Kopingi – the head of the village and our to-be guide for the Mt. Kinabalu climb – led through the show. After the show we walked over to the house of the sister of Kopingi – for dinner

Leaving Kuching …

I had a few more hours this morning in Kuching before making it to the airport for an early afternoon flight to Kota Kinabalu.
